LIVING IN CZECH

Introduction

Although I was mainly immersed in a pseudo-Anglo-American environment, I did of course have to adapt to many new things including the language, currency and food. I learned enough Czech to be able to greet someone, ask about prices - the basics really, and on my monthly wage I was still able to save up for special things. (The Czech currency is the 'crown' or korona.) Being a vegetarian was at first a bit of a nightmare. The Czech's don't really have any concept of Vegetarianism - meat and potatoes being their staple diet. Though when I had learned how to supplement my proteins (sesame snaps were a god-send) everything was fine. I have to admit that the thing I craved for most was cheddar cheese and sliced bread. Although the fall of Communism had brought many improvements to the town, the arrival of cheddar and Hovis was yet to occur!
