Introduction

Just to give you a general overview of the School, I have taken some extracts from the official TIS website… However, to get a more personal perspective of life at TIS, visit the Life page.

"The Townshend International School, is a private, non-affiliated initiative, named after the Irish humanist and scholar George Townshend (1876 - 1957). The school was established in 1992 as a non-profit project and sponsoring a number of students from its host country, the Czech Republic."

"The town of Hluboka, where the school is situated, lies ten minutes from Ceske Budejovice (Budweis), two hours from Prague and 45 minutes from either the German or Austrian borders. In 1993 Townshend acquired a sizeable amount of land on a hilltop in Hluboka with views over the castle and lake. Plans have been drawn for the future campus, which is to accommodate 350 students. Until then, Townshend uses a wing of the local school and the dormitories are situated in the centre of the town."

"The vision of Townshend is the creation of a moral and ethical environment in which, through guided interaction, students can learn to respect and appreciate people of different cultures and backgrounds and to show that respect in communication and consultation. Through challenge and discipline they must learn to take responsibility for their own lives and be of service to their environment. They should leave this school with a positive attitude towards life and have acquired the ability to process what they have learned with creativity and a pioneering spirit."

"TIS is open to students of different religious, ethnic and racial backgrounds. At present, staff and students come from over 30 countries, including Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Iran, Italy, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sudan and the United States."
